THE BRITISH LIBRARY CELEBRATES 150 YEARS OF ALICE IN WONDERLAND

27-07-2016

To celebrate 150 years of the publication of Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland, The British Library have put together an exhibition which explores how Alice has captured our imaginations for so many years. The imaginative story was first narrated by Lewis Carroll, which was then embellished by John Tenniel’s lively illustrations. This exhibition charts the ways in which both Carroll and Tenniel were involved in the publication process and looks at how the story has inspired so many other mediums. Highlights include Carroll’s original manuscript and works from later illustrators and artists fascinated by the story, including Salvador Dali, Mervyn Peake, Ralph Steadman, Arthur Rackham and Mabel Lucie Atwell. The exhibition, produced and installed by Stylo consists of a breathtaking series of panels and mirrors, decorated with graphics designed by Tony Antoniou, of art from many diverse editions and haunting passages from the novel itself. The exhibition is given further personality through scenic 3D elements including a bottle, house and large label hanging above the exhibition, all made from Re-board. The library has also opened a pop-up shop in the entrance hall from 21 October 2015 until January 2016. You can find the perfect gifts, from stationery to accessories, clothing and homewares.
