THE SPIRIT OF WEST HAM – TRANSFORMATION OF THE OLYMPIC STADIUM

04-09-2016

Four years have passed since London created the incredible arena that held the 2012 Olympics. During this time, the space has been transformed by West Ham United Football Club, and is now the club’s home stadium. Working alongside design consultancy 20.20, the club intended to create “something that fans could be proud of, as well as something unique that will stand the test of time”. The arena houses the VIP and membership areas, consisting of restaurants, lounges and bars – which all are named and designed in line with the clubs East London heritage. Wooden textures and copper finishes are incorporated throughout each zone within the stadium, alongside deep shades of brown, burgundy and navy blue. Dark wood wall panels are decorated with diagrams and quotes that represent the clubs growth and history – such as a map from West Ham’s first stadium in Hermit Road, to the Olympic Stadium. John Lee, 20.20’s creative director explains how they aimed to “capture the spirit of West Ham right from the start.” The club will move into the stadium in August this year, however before then the arena will hold other UK athletic events, such as the London Anniversary Games in July.
