One of the biggest challenges for retailers is to increase sales per square foot while reducing costs at the same time. Often, merchandise lighting is overlooked due to perceived high costs and low impact on sales. But this couldn’t be further from the truth! A recent study by Merchant Mechanics, a company that specialises in investigations of the detailed interactions between shoppers, merchandise and selling environments, has revealed some staggering findings that highlight how people react differently to the same display, with and without lighting. Two prototype retail stores were set up in a busy shopping centre to examine the effects of illuminated displays vs. non-illuminated displays. On the first day store one’s display was illuminated while store two’s was not. On the second day, this was reversed.
