The Role of Fabric Diffuser Technology in Odour Control and Air Purification

Adequate ventilation is essential in kitchens, gyms and anywhere where odours and stale air can become an issue. Without good ventilation, noxious fumes and unpleasant smells can build up, causing discomfort and potentially presenting a health hazard to building occupants.

Improving ventilation in these locations is often a matter of bringing in fresh air and extracting out the old, stale air. Whilst in some locations it would be enough to open a window, this is not practical in kitchens and other applications where external contaminants must be avoided. Hence the need for a more robust mechanical ventilation approach.

Fabric diffusers for freshness and odour control

One way to improve ventilation in these locations is to use bespoke fabric diffusers. We can use a range of diffuser options, mixing and matching them to achieve the ideal air pattern for the space. This makes it easier to set up the fabric ducts and diffusers so that they can work alongside, and not against, extract equipment.

Fabric duct and diffuser design

Gyms and fitness centres generally require large amounts of air to maintain a fresh and pleasant environment for gym goers. Air movement is often expected and well-received by occupants as it can help with thermal regulation and reduce the feeling of a stuffy gym, resulting in a much more pleasant workout experience. We select the fabric diffusers based on the size of the room, the mounting height and the supply air characteristics we are dealing with (pressure, temperatures, etc). Fabric nozzles, the preferred option when the fabric ducts are installed at greater heights, create directed jets of supply air with some velocity. Alternatively, if the fabric ducts are at a lower height, we can create very inductive air patterns using laser-cut perforations. This way, the ambient air is entrained into the air flowing through the perforations, generating more air movement which can lead to better gym ventilation and reduce the build-up of stale air.

In kitchens and other applications where smells and odours are a problem, we take a different approach. It is important to ensure that the air moves efficiently from the source of the odours to the extract grilles. The position of the fabric duct relative to the extract grilles is a very important parameter – incorrect fabric diffuser placement risks allowing the supply air to reach the extract grilles without adequately removing the stale air.

Fabric diffuser selection can also affect how efficiently odours are removed. If the diffusers can’t provide the required level of throw and spread for the height, required temperatures, and available air volume and pressure, the fabric duct system won’t operate correctly in reducing odours. It is therefore crucial that diffusers are selected and designed well to meet the application’s requirements.
